Happy Solstice! So we're halfway through 2019, and I thought I would pause this morning and take a look at what I've accomplished in the first half of the year, and what I'm looking forward to.
My 2019 has been similar to the early stages of a garden. You plant some seeds and make sure the soil is just right. You keep the soil damp--but not too damp! You enact measures to keep the bugs from getting to any tender sprouts that might pop up. And then. You. Wait.
And wait. And wait some more. Didn't the seed packet say twelve days to germination? Hasn't it been fourteen? What it nothing sprouts at all? What if a bug got in and ate everything in the night, despite your best efforts, and you're just staring at empty dirt?
So I've been writing, and submitting, and writing some more. I've been doing a lot of waiting. I did get one thing published early in the year, which was a nice little late-winter ego cookie.
I met some lovely people at the Nebula Awards Conference and I can't wait to go back. I put myself out there and applied to Viable Paradise (which is one of those seeds I'm still waiting for news on).
So the first half of 2019 has been a lot of prep, and even though sometimes when I'm scrolling through Twitter and seeing one publication announcement after another from my peers it's easy for me to slip back into "what if the bugs ate all my seeds while I was sleeping??" panic mode, I just have to take some breaths, take a walk, and keep planting more seeds. Keep tending that word garden.
Now, entering the second half of the year, what's to come?
I have a couple of projects in the works for later this summer, and I'll be experimenting with putting content out through Substack. I have some short stories that need a bit more editing before I feel comfortable putting them back out on the submission trail again. I'm working on edits to my first full-length novel now, and hope to have it beta-reader ready by September. I should hear back about my Viable Paradise app in the next few weeks. If I get in: great! If not, well, I'll still be writing. All in all, I think I'm on the right track for a solid early-career year.
For now, have a great & magical solstice weekend!
